Senior Citizens Month 2026: A Golden September Filled with Celebration, Connection, and New Possibilities

‘Honouring a Golden Legacy, Shaping a Bold Future’
- Participants of the Art Class for Seniors

September is a special month for older Jamaicans.
Across the island, National Senior Citizens Month 2026 will bring together seniors, families, communities, organisations, and service providers to celebrate the contributions of older persons while creating opportunities for them to remain active, connected, and engaged.
Spearheaded by the National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC), this year’s commemoration takes place from September 1 to October 1, 2026, under the inspiring theme:
‘Honouring a Golden Legacy, Shaping a Bold Future’
The theme is a reminder that ageing is not simply about looking back at what has been accomplished. It is also about recognising the possibilities that lie ahead. Older persons continue to contribute to families, communities, businesses, and Jamaica’s social and cultural life in countless ways.
This year is even more significant as the National Council for Senior Citizens celebrates 50 years of service to Jamaica’s older population.

From competitions and health fairs to social gatherings, entertainment, and creative activities, there is plenty to look forward to. Here are some of the activities happening during Senior Citizens Month.
🧠 National Senior Spelling Bee Competition
Who says you are ever too old to learn?
One of the highlights of the month will be the National Senior Spelling Bee Competition, featuring representatives from Jamaica’s 14 parishes.
The competition promises to showcase the knowledge, confidence, memory, and competitive spirit of older Jamaicans. You won't have to be in the room to enjoy it. The competition will broadcast live on radio and on the JIS YouTube channel, giving Jamaicans across the country an opportunity to cheer on their parish representatives.
So, get ready to spell!

❤️ Ageing Fair at Emancipation Park
On Thursday, September 10, seniors and their families can head to Emancipation Park for the Ageing Fair.
The event will provide an opportunity for older persons to access important services and information in one convenient location. Activities will include health screenings, social services, and registration opportunities, including assistance with services such as National Insurance Scheme (NIS), and identification registration.

There will also be opportunities for local vendors, making the fair a wonderful space to discover products and services while supporting Jamaican entrepreneurs.
For seniors, these kinds of events are especially valuable because healthy ageing involves much more than medical care. Access to information, social protection, identification, community resources, and opportunities for participation are all important parts of living well as we age.
👵🏾👴🏾 National Grandparents Day
Grandparents hold a special place in Jamaican families. They are storytellers, caregivers, teachers, historians, advisers, and keepers of family traditions. For many families, grandparents are also the people who remind younger generations where they came from and help keep cherished customs alive.
National Grandparents Day provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate these important family members.
Why not make the day meaningful?
Visit a grandparent. Take them out for lunch. Give them a call. Sit and listen to their stories. Ask about their childhood. Look through old photographs together.
Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give an older person is simply our time and attention.

🍲 Friday Lyme: Food, Games, Music, and Fellowship
Looking for something fun to do on a Friday?
The Accountant General’s Department (AGD) will be hosting Senior Citizens' Lyme events every Friday in September as part of the Senior Citizens Month celebrations.
These are not your ordinary Friday gatherings!
Seniors can look forward to free soup, exciting giveaways, games, music, and fellowship.
It is a wonderful reminder that social connection is an important part of ageing well. Having opportunities to laugh, meet new people, enjoy music, and simply spend time together can help make later life more enjoyable and fulfilling.
So, seniors, grab a friend and come out and lyme!

🎭 Hurricane Hataclaps: Laugh for a Cause with Golden Designs

🎨 Golden Designs Creative Ageing Day Centre Reopens
The creative energy continues at Golden Designs Creative Ageing Day Centre, which reopens on Wednesday, September 16. For September, returning participants will receive $500 off all art sessions.
Creative ageing is at the heart of what we do at Golden Designs. We believe that creativity does not have an expiry date. Whether it is painting, drawing, crafting, designing, or simply trying something new, creative activities can provide opportunities for self-expression, social connection, learning, and enjoyment.
Our Day Centre provides a welcoming space where seniors can create, connect, and continue exploring their talents.
So, if you have been thinking about returning to art or finally trying it for the first time; September is a great time to begin.

🌍 October 1: International Day of Older Persons
The Senior Citizens Month observance culminates on October 1, which the United Nations recognises as the International Day of Older Persons. The day provides an opportunity globally to recognise the contributions of older persons and draw attention to the opportunities and challenges associated with ageing.
It is a fitting conclusion to a month dedicated to celebrating Jamaica's seniors.

From Westmoreland to St. Thomas, and communities across the island, older Jamaicans are making valuable contributions every day. They are entrepreneurs. Artists. Farmers. Educators. Caregivers. Community leaders. Volunteers. Parents. Grandparents. Mentors. And so much more.

Ageing Is Not the End of the Story
At Golden Designs, we believe that growing older should not mean becoming invisible. Older persons deserve opportunities to participate, create, learn, socialise, contribute, and flourish. National Senior Citizens Month gives all of us an opportunity to think differently about ageing. It is not simply as a period of retirement or dependence, but as a stage of life filled with experience, wisdom, creativity, and potential.

The theme ‘Honouring a Golden Legacy; Shaping a Bold Future’ captures that beautifully. We honour the generations who helped to build Jamaica. And at the same time, we must create a future in which today's older persons, and the generations coming behind them, can age with dignity, purpose, connection and opportunity.

How Will You Celebrate?
Whether you are a senior citizen, a caregiver, a family member, a community organisation, or simply someone who believes older Jamaicans deserve to be celebrated, there are many ways to participate this September.
Attend an event. Support a senior entrepreneur. Take a grandparent out. Share a meal. Learn something from an older person. Invite a senior to participate in a community activity.
Most importantly, make ageing visible, valued, and celebrated.
