HURRICANE MELISSA howled through Jamaica, it left behind damaged homes, heartbreak, uncertainty, and loss. Among the hardest hit are our beloved senior citizens. Many of whom now live in unhealthy and unpleasant circumstances, struggling without power, clean water, food, or even basic clothing.
At Golden Designs, we believe that our seniors, who have given so much to this country and their families, deserve dignity, care, and compassion. That’s why we’ve launched the Hurricane Melissa Relief Drive for Senior Citizens, a heartfelt initiative dedicated to bringing comfort and stability to older adults as they recover from this devastating storm.
Standing with Our Seniors
In this relief phase, our goal is simple yet vital. We aim to provide humanitarian assistance until some semblance of normalcy returns to the lives of our seniors. From now through the end of January, Golden Designs will be collecting and distributing relief supplies to senior citizens across the western parishes most affected by Hurricane Melissa: Westmoreland, St. Ann, Trelawny, St. James, Hanover, and St. Elizabeth. Our seniors are facing unimaginable hardship, and together, we can help ease their burden.
Items Needed
We’re appealing for donations of essential items that can make an immediate difference in their lives, including:
Cleaning and Household Supplies – Buckets, sanitisers, disinfectants, bleach, mops, soap, and tarpaulins.
Food and Nutritional Products – Canned goods, crackers, oats, rice, nutritional drinks, water, and other non-perishable items suitable for older adults.
Clothing - House dresses, pants, shirts, male and female underwear, and other wearables.
Art and Crochet Supplies – Many of our seniors earn an income or find emotional healing through creative expression. Replacing their lost art and crochet supplies will help them begin rebuilding their livelihoods and restore a sense of purpose.
How You Can Help
Every act of kindness counts. If you’re in Jamaica, you can drop off your donations at our collection point at Regardless (The Manley Centre) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 9 AM and 3 PM.
If you’re living overseas, your support is equally valuable. You can contribute by:
Sending care packages or supplies directly to our collection centre in Jamaica. Our address is: Regardless (The Manley Centre), 4 Washington Drive, Kingston 10, Jamaica W.I.
Partnering with us through your organisation, workplace, alumni group, or church community to sponsor relief packages.
To get involved or coordinate your contribution, please email us at: goldendesigns60@gmail.com.
Looking Ahead
While our current focus is on immediate relief, Golden Designs is already preparing for the recovery phase. We hope to assist in rebuilding homes and restoring hope for senior citizens who have lost so much. We’ll share more about that in an upcoming blog post.
For now, we’re calling on those who can, at yard and abroad, to lend a hand, offer a prayer, a word of encouragement, and show our seniors that they are not forgotten. Together, we can rebuild lives, restore hope, and comfort those who are hurting.
Leave a word of encouragement for our senior citizens in the comments!
