Golden Designs Receives Heartfelt Support from Logos Hope Jamaica

Members of Golden Designs, Dr. Verona Barnes, second right, and Melva Yorke-Johnson, expressing appreciation for the sewing machines to Logos Hope Jamaica.

GOLDEN DESIGNS is overjoyed to share that we are a proud recipient of Logos Hope’s Community Engagement initiative. Through this programme, our company has been blessed with three sewing machines and the priceless gift of time from Logos Hope volunteers who joined one of our art classes for seniors.

For those unfamiliar, Logos Hope, affectionately known in Jamaica as the “book ship”, is much more than a floating bookstore. Owned and operated by GBA Ships, this vessel sails across the world promoting literacy, education, and cultural exchange. At every port, the Logos Hope team partners with local organisations, providing aid, encouragement, and opportunities that reflect God’s compassion for people of every background.

A Welcome Gift to Empower Seniors
The donation of three sewing machines could not have come at a better time. At Golden Designs, we believe in artistic engagement and economic empowerment for seniors, and sewing is a key part of our textile arts programme.

Previously, certain tasks, such as lining bags and hats, had to be outsourced to seamstresses. Now, thanks to the sewing machines, our seniors can complete these steps themselves. This reduces both time and costs, while increasing efficiency.

Even more exciting, a few of our seniors who already possess sewing skills but lacked access to a machine can now put their talents to use, creating garments and household items in-house.

Dr. Verona Barnes, (at right) Lead Facilitator of the Textile Arts Programme at Golden Designs, is eager to put to use the sewing machines received.

This is not just about machines, it is about unlocking potential. These new tools give our seniors greater independence, creativity, and the opportunity to fulfil custom orders in ways that were previously out of reach.

Volunteers Bringing Joy and Encouragement
Beyond the donation, Logos Hope volunteers also shared their time and hearts with our seniors. Two team members joined one of our art classes, engaging with participants, offering encouragement, and reminding them that their creativity and resilience are an inspiration.

The volunteers got into action during the Art Class for Seniors and did a drawing of their ship, Logos Hope.

Another group even rolled up their sleeves to help upgrade our facility in St. Andrew, a gesture that spoke volumes about the spirit of service and care that Logos Hope embodies.

For our seniors, this interaction was more than just an activity. It was a reminder that they are seen, valued, and supported by a global community.

Logos Hope in Jamaica
Currently docked in Kingston at the Cement Coal Pier until August 19, the Logos Hope has already become a hub of activity for book lovers across the island. The ship offers over 5,000 book titles at affordable prices, covering subjects ranging from science and business to parenting, cooking, and faith-based literature.

Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Admission is $500, with free entry for children under 12 and seniors 65 and older.

After Kingston, the ship will sail to Montego Bay, where it will be stationed from August 22 to September 14.

A Grateful Heart
Golden Designs is extremely honoured to have been selected as one of the beneficiaries of Logos Hope’s support programme. Their gift of sewing machines and personal engagement with our seniors has not only boosted our capacity but also warmed our hearts.

This partnership is a beautiful reminder that when people come together, whether through creativity, service, or simple acts of kindness; hope multiplies.

To the Logos Hope Jamaica team: thank you for sowing seeds of love, empowerment, and encouragement into the lives of Jamaican seniors.

Credit: Freepik.com Colliecia Wright/Media Intern A balanced lifestyle refers to having a sense of control and well-being in all areas of life. According to an article published by Physio West, written by Bec Clare (2020), balanced living involves achieving optimal health in various aspects including relationships, work, fitness, health, and emotional happiness. From an early age, we are taught the importance of balance in our lives. However, as we age, particularly upon entering the senior citizen stage, maintaining this balance can become challenging. The transition to this phase often brings many changes — retirement, adjustments in living environments, and new health challenges are common experiences for seniors. As an article by the World Health Organization (2022) points out, while some health variations among older adults are due to genetics, a significant portion is influenced by physical and social environments, such as their homes and communities, as well as personal fa...

Suicide Among Seniors: A Growing Concern

Ashley Thompson/Media Intern Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day, we are reminded of the critical importance of addressing mental health challenges and preventing the tragic loss of life through suicide. While the focus often turns to younger populations, it is crucial to shine a light on an often-overlooked group deeply affected by this issue — our seniors. As people age, the emotional, social, and physical challenges they face can increase their vulnerability to feelings of hopelessness and isolation, which may lead to suicide. This article explores the alarming rate of suicide among older adults, the unique factors that contribute to their struggles, and the steps we can take to support them in their most vulnerable moments. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in their 2023 article Suicide Prevention , defines suicide as a death caused by self-inflicted harm with the intent to die. Tragically, suicide does not discriminate by age, gender, race, or ethnicit...
